Library Confessions

  1. I’m writing this to say, yet again, how much I feast on your every word, Andrea. Thanks for the link. I’ve wrestled with the same thoughts, but to have written, to be read, that’s everything. End of story.

    1. I love your avatar, Judy! Nicely done. Your comment about wanting to be read really impacted me (obviously) and helped inspire this post. Thank you for that. I feel the same way as you. The words just have to come out, and if we’re lucky, someone will read them. Maybe someone will even like them 😉

  2. Love the last image you created on ways to appreciate a book. I don’t feel guilty about borrowing books. I check out books at my local library all the time. (Read my July 22 post.) I only buy books that I know I’ll love and will spend money on memoirs, the writing craft and favorite authors. It’s important to surround ourselves with great literature, whether in the library or at home on our bookshelves.

    1. Thanks Joyce, I had fun creating that one. I had lots more ways to appreciate a book – lend it, give it as a gift, recommend it, review it, pick it for book club, sell it, send a note to the author – but my timer went off and I resumed Mom duty (making lunches). Plus I kind of liked the way it looks as is – it might have gotten too junky with more sets.

  3. I’m not a writer at all but I LOVE books. I borrow from the library a lot but I admit I do like to purchase books whenever I can squeeze the money into the budget…or better yet receive a gift card! I received a Kindle a couple years ago as a gift and I just love the free books that I can get through some of the newsletters that are put out. Funniest thing, I felt guilty about that until I realized that every few free books I read I end up reading one that is first in a series…and I must buy the rest to find out what happens…and I do buy them!

    1. Every year, when I get a small influx of cash for my birthday (yes, I’m 39 and still get birthday cash from my parents and in-laws), I buy myself at least one book, sometimes two. It’s so fun to have book money. My parents gave me a gift card to B&N for Christmas last year, and boy did I savor that. I think I stretched it out for maybe 3 months, spending lots of time in the aisles, buying one book at a time, and putting an awful lot of thought into each purchase. That was a good gift.

  4. I do probably 95% of my reading from the library… but I feel no guilt about it. Why should I? My options aren’t to buy the book or borrow it; my options are to borrow it or not read it at all. If an author (or anyone else for that matter) can’t appreciate that, well… not my problem.

  5. Wonderful. Sharing books is not seen in the same way as sharing music or films, which we are hammered for as participating in an act which is tantamount to stealing. I think it’s that writing is meant to be shared in any way you can. As a writer, i agree with your friend that i just want people to read my words. A reader shouldn’t feel too much guilt!

  6. I read this post a couple of days ago but it has stayed on my mind so I had to come back and comment. When you read a book and it blows your mind- you talk about it, write about it and share your insights and reflections with other book lovers. Trusted word of mouth recommendations are the best. You promote writers. Any author should be thrilled to have you read their book- whether or not you pay for it. Hopefully, soon you will be receiving many great books in the mail for free!
