    1. I agree. I am a fan of variety. From the coast of Alabama to the tundra of Alaska to the dry desert of Arizona, I’m seeing all kinds of terrain. Looking forward now to the Ozarks of Arkansas.

  1. I’m from Arizona and I wish I had other recommendations to offer! Sadly, my favorite books about Arizona are cookbooks. On the other hand, I suppose that’s not a sad thing at all…

  2. Loved it! I think I’d enjoy The Bean Trees, what do you think? Remind me to tell you sometime about the “canyon crazies” we met while backpacking in the Grand Canyon years ago. Not our trip, but the one I spent a week in the Canyon with Joe and some other buddies.

  3. Half Broke Horses — I still can’t get over the scene with the snake landing on the Easter dinner table. Grit is absolutely a perfect word to describe Jeanette Wall’s no-nonsense grandmother.

  4. Thanks for this. I live in AZ and have only read the Bean Trees of your three. I’ll definitely check out the other two. Like Meridith, I have a lot of AZ cookbooks – my favorite? The Turquoise Room. It’s a terrific restaurant in Winslow.
