Maybe characters don’t have to be my friends

    1. Yes! That interview is what made me pick up the book. I’m waiting for one of Messud’s others to become available at the library so I can try more of her work. And any friend of Gus and Woodrow is a friend of mine. Glad you’re here!

  1. Another book that I liked in spite of the very unlikeable characters throughout was the novel “We Need To Talk About Kevin” by Lionel Shriver. This was a VERY unsettling book to read, but once I got past the idea that I had to actually like those characters and approve of their actions, I was able to appreciate the crafting of the novel.
I loved “Gone Girl”, wasn’t crazy about “The Woman Upstairs”, and I’ll have to give “The People In The Trees” a try!

  2. You’ll find yourself rooting for the ultimate bad guy: Hannibal Lecter, if you read Thomas Harris’ “Hannibal Rising.”

    1. Oh boy. I don’t know if I can handle that. Did you ever read “In Cold Blood?” Uncle Syd has mentioned it a couple of times. My to-read list is getting to be way too long.

  3. When I found myself liking the main character, Alex, in “Clockwork Orange”
( I read the book a year before I saw the movie ), I knew it was a game-changer for me.

    1. Oh yeah. My grandma – Dad’s mom – got me hooked on “Clockwork Orange.” The soundtrack was her favorite album, and as a pre-teen I was captivated by the cover. I think I read that and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” the same summer. The summer my mind began to expand beyond Sweet Valley High 🙂
