  1. It’s sad that there are people who won’t take literature seriously until they read this study, but since those people exist, I’m glad the research was done! And, like you, I find that looking at literature through the lens of empathy development helps me think about what exactly defines literary fiction. It has other goals, of course, but this is one of its deepest and most human.

    1. Yes, now the next step is to determine whether it has long term effects or only the short term ones they recorded in this study. I’d love to see if creative (or literary) nonfiction had similar results as well. The nonfiction they chose for this was fairly dry from what I understand.

  2. I’m will have to start using my Thesaurus to find superlatives superlative enough for your writing, Andrea. The images you evoked with “cotton candy,” “sticks to your ribs,” “satiated,” “potato chips” are right on. I love the whole post…it says what I would have said if I could have.
