A pop of green

Violet growing from stone

I can’t resist greenery growing from the fissures of stones. Rocks seem an unlikely place for plants to take root. Granite is unyielding. It says: keep out, you cannot penetrate me.

And yet. There are little flowers that do. Every time I see green growing from stone, I am reminded of the persistence of life. And I am glad.

  1. It is one of Nature’s amazing aspects to see the way plants take root in the unlikeliest of places. I am always reminded of the tree roots taking over Ta Prohm in Cambodia when someone mentions granite and greenery.

  2. Lovely picture. I am the same way. Our house is undergoing major construction, and the garden this summer was left untended, and in cases covered with construction detritus, yet the perennials did incredible things pushing themselves up through the mess.
